Caroline Balz and Allison Goldberg have an abiding love of aesthetics that’s been percolating since childhood, but what makes this partnership truly unique is their shared background in psychology.

Caroline started her career at a consulting firm before pivoting to studying psychology at graduate school. Having earned two Master’s degrees in Organizational Psychology and Counseling Psychology, she had an epiphany—the psychological principles she applied in her private practice were also relevant to how people function in and react to spaces from a design standpoint. With the realization that she could pair her two passions, the seed for Psychological Interiors was planted.

Allison began her career as a psychotherapist after earning her Masters in Clinical Social Work. She found her calling working with at-risk youth, but her longtime love of art and interior design were ignited while overseeing the major renovation of her own home. While searching for art to complete her family’s forever home, Allison began experimenting with digital photographs to create her own original work. From that labor of love, her business Scene and Soul was born.

After a serendipitous meeting while volunteering at St. Jude, Caroline and Allison realized their similar backgrounds and shared love of interior design made for a perfect pairing. They worked in tandem on several design projects before deciding to make their partnership official with Psychological Interiors.

With deep New England roots, Caroline lives with her husband, two sons, and two Siberian cats in a lovingly restored farmhouse west of Boston. She enjoys spending time in Chatham and Maine, where she fondly recalls visiting her grandmother’s antique shop as a young child.

Also a New England native , Allison, her husband, three children, and one fur baby reside in their forever home outside of Boston. With weekends and summers spent in Maine, Allison seeks to incorporate art into her young family’s everyday life as her parents did for her.

It’s not just about the details, it’s about how those collective details make you feel.
